Mikrofill was appointed to provide a reliable pressurisation solution for a commercial heating and cooling system, ensuring stable system pressure, improved operational efficiency, and long-term protection of critical plant equipment. The project required a solution that would simplify installation, maintain compliance with water regulations, and minimise ongoing maintenance requirements.
Modern Pressurisation Solutions for a Historic City Centre Building
The Royal Exchange is one of Manchester’s most recognisable landmarks. Originally constructed in the 19th century and now home to the renowned Royal Exchange Theatre, premium office space and retail accommodation, the Grade II listed building has played a central role in the city’s commercial and cultural life for generations.
As part of a major refurbishment programme, the building’s heating infrastructure required modernisation to support the continued operation of its diverse facilities while respecting the constraints of a historic structure.
To achieve this, the primary and secondary distribution pipework serving the theatre and office areas was converted to a sealed, pressurised system using multiple Mikrofill pressurisation packages.
The Challenge
Refurbishing building services within a historic landmark presents a unique set of engineering challenges.
The Royal Exchange combines multiple occupancies within a single complex, including theatre spaces, offices and public areas, each with differing heating demands and operational requirements. Any upgrade needed to deliver reliable pressure management across the heating network while integrating seamlessly into an existing and highly complex building services infrastructure.
In addition, the project formed part of a wider refurbishment programme within a listed building environment, where system reliability and long-term maintainability were essential considerations.
Project solution
Mechanical services contractor Walsh IBS installed a series of Mikrofill pressurisation packages to support the sealed heating systems serving the building.
Each package comprised:
- Mikrofill 3 filling and backflow prevention device
- Floor-standing expansion vessel
- Service drain valve
- Factory pre-commissioning and certification
The inclusion of factory pre-commissioning ensured that each expansion vessel was correctly charged and matched to the specified cold fill pressure before arriving on site. This streamlined installation and helped ensure optimal system performance from day one.
The Mikrofill 3 units (now discontinued, please see 3 Pro) provided automatic filling and pressure maintenance, while integrated backflow protection helped ensure compliance with modern water regulations.
The Results
The completed installation delivered a reliable and professionally commissioned pressurisation solution as part of the wider refurbishment of one of Manchester’s most important heritage buildings.
